Nokia and Yahoo! team up for maps and email sharing

Nokia and Yahoo! have unveiled a range of content sharing and service collaborations in a partnership set to benefit both companies and their respective users.

Predicting this announcement on Friday, we expected Yahoo! to produce and supply Nokia with a range of apps for their handsets. What we got at the announcement today, however, exceeded our expectations as the pair revealed the collaboration of services will run both ways.

The partnership, which started over five years ago, today announced its biggest joint venture in which improvements will be made to email and instant messaging services as well as the maps and navigation functions.

Through the latest collaboration, Nokia will become the exclusive provider of Yahoo!’s maps and navigation services to be labelled: “Powered by Ovi.” In return, Yahoo! will provide Nokia’s Ovi users with Ovi Mail and Ovi Chat services, both of which are to come under the header: “Powered by Yahoo!.”

So, whilst Nokia brings its pedigree and experience in location-based products to the table, Yahoo! throws its expertise as one of the world’s top email and chat providers into the mixing bowl. Stirring it together in some Jamie Oliver inspired mixture, and the result is an allegiance that will not just help the companies boost their portfolio of services, give Nokia access to Yahoo!’s millions of users and Yahoo! and inlet to emerging markets, but benefit their users and the service they receive.

Although no official date of release has been announced, the first joint-branded offerings from the Nokia, Yahoo! mash-up are expected later this year.
