Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg now worth $6.9bn

Mark Zuckerberg, the man who brought Facebook to life, has been named 35th richest man in America according to the latest Forbes rich list.

The 26-year-old who created the friend-collecting social networking site from his Harvard University dorm room, is now worth $6.9bn (£4.4 billion) up from $4.9bn from last year as he continues to rise up the most lucrative ladder.

Zuckerberg still has some way to go to catch up with Microsoft’s former head honcho Bill Gates though, who remains top of the rich list pile for the 17th year running, with an estimated net worth of 54bn (£34.5 billion).

One fellow tech compatriot Zuckerbeg has managed to leapfrog is Apple’s Steve Jobs who lands in at number 41 with a net worth of $6.1bn (£3.9 billion). Google’s Larry Page and Sergey Brin both feature in at number 11 each with a net worth of $15bn (£10 billion).

Facebook, which private equity deals have recently valued at around $23bn, now boasts 500 million members and is set to get the Hollywood treatment with ‘Social Network‘  a film based on the founding of the social networking site to hit cinemas in the near future.

Talk has also intensified this week of a partnership with INQ to launch a Facebook phone, which is likely to increase that already sizeable money stash.

Despite his rapidly growing fortune, Zuckeberg has also announced that he will be donating $100m (£66m) of his money to help schools in New Jersey.
