There is a very good chance that you are seeing the effects of a hijackware
infection!

NB: If you had no anti-virus application installed or the subscription had
expired *when the machine first got infected* and/or your subscription has
since expired and/or the machine’s not been kept fully-patched at Windows
Update, don’t waste your time with any of the below: Format & reinstall
Windows. A Repair Install will NOT help!

1. See if you can download/run the MSRT manually:
https://www.microsoft.com/en-in/download/malicious-software-removal-tool-details.aspx

NB: Run the FULL scan, not the QUICK scan! You may need to download the
MSRT on a non-infected machine, then transfer MRT.EXE to the infected
machine and rename it to SCAN.EXE before running it.

2. [WinXP ONLY!! =>] Run the Windows Live Safety Center’s ‘Protection’ scan
(only!) in Safe Mode with Networking, if need be:
http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/center/howsafe.htm

3. Run a /thorough/ check for hijackware, including posting requested logs
in an appropriate forum, not here.

If these procedures look too complex – and there is no shame in admitting
this isn’t your cup of tea – take the machine to a local, reputable and
independent (i.e., not BigBoxStoreUSA) computer repair shop.

Download Free Cracked Driver Magician Full Version

Driver Magician is a handy software utility for device driver backups, driver restoration, update and removal in windows OS. This application identifies all hardwares installed in your system and extracts their associated drivers from hard disks and backs them up to a different location specified by the user. These backups can become very much handy when you format and reinstall your existing operating system.

Please do not follow the advice given you by the other poster to mess about
with your defrag settings. I don’t think this could possibly have anything
to do with your issue and you could make things far worse.

Do look in Event Viewer to see if anything is shown as failing.
Event Viewer How To (TechNet) – http://tinyurl.com/2jejzc

But I would also not forget the hardware. It sounds like the power supply
could be going and the hard drive stops spinning. Are you able to
troubleshoot the hardware yourself? If not, take the machine to a competent
local computer tech. This will not be a BigComputerStore/GeekSquad type of
place.
