Qualcomm, the American wireless telecommunications research and development company, being one of the most active at the Mobile World Congress 2011 (MWC 2011), taking place in Barcelona showcased a tablet/eReader device featuring the Mirasol display. The technological display is a major innovation in the field of display technologies, with the Mirasol display to gather pace on the mobile front.

Back in 2004 Qualcomm acquired Iridigm Display Corporation, a company which developed the IMOD technology. The Mirasol display, compared to regular LCD panels is more energy efficient and blends in with devices such as cell phones and eBook readers perfectly, while offering a prolonged battery life.

Furthermore, the technology is better than LCD legibility when exposed to direct sunlight as it reflects the ambient light. This increases the brightness of the display in well-lit environments. For now, the technology has been only used on a limited number of devices, including some stereo Bluetooth headsets, mp3 players and a few cell phones designed for the Asian market.

Apple iPhone 4 was successfully named the “Best Mobile Device” at the recently held Mobile World Congress 2011 (MWC 2011) in Barcelona. Support from judges, Apple‘s newly released gadget was made the winner due to its “great screen, sharp design, fantastic materials, and phenomenal ecosystem for app developers.”

Other contenders at the Mobile Awards included, HTC Desire, LG Optimus 7, BlackBerry Torch 9800 and the Samsung Galaxy S. Even though at one point I do agree with the judges, on the other hand my choice would be the LG Optimus 7. An edge should have been given with the device being totally new, a totally different OS, features, design and specially the wide demand.

MWC Global Mobile Awards 2011

While HTC competed for the award with its “Desire” handset, the smartphone was not able to succeed but it did won the award for “Device Manufacturer of the Year”. Handing out the award, the judges told:

Built its market presence from nowhere, with fresh branding and marketing and a strong portfolio of devices across many platforms. In particular, it has proven an exceptionally popular and enduring phone manufacturer. With great communication and good customer service, this is a well-deserved award.

two is better than one

Much to everybody’s surprise, the long awaited Verizon iPhone may not be doing better than everyone thinks. According to BGR.com, the Verizon iPhone is only beating AT&T in terms of sales by less than was expected.

Below are unit sales totals from five Apple stores combined (including two very, very prominent Apple stores) showing both Verizon and AT&T iPhone 4 sales during the Verizon iPhone’s first five days of availability:

– Thursday: Verizon = 909, AT&T = 539
– Friday: Verizon = 916, AT&T = 680
– Saturday: Verizon = 660, AT&T = 471
– Sunday: Verizon = 796, AT&T = 701
– Monday: Verizon = 711, AT&T = 618

Now, though these numbers aren’t bad, this shows that the popularity of the Verizon iPhone is decreasing and therefore may be fair game between AT&T and Verizon again.

What with two carriers now carrying the iPhone, Apple is raking it in, undoubtedly, the choice between carriers is of no matter to them and either way, they still earn money.

Though more than half a million Verizon iPhones were pre-ordered, demand is already settling down and, obviously, ad campaigns will continue strong; Apple raking in the money while two telecommunications giants tear each others apart.
