It took me about 30 minutes to get myself into Hard Rock. Yes, I wasn’t on the list too, but that wasn’t the only reason why. The line, the line was long. Zero fans came from everywhere. There were guys in formal shirts, there were the long-hair dudes, the dudes who looked like they just smoked one up (probably did), everyone.
I have been for quite a few gigs, heard a lot of bands, but very rarely witness what I did yesterday. Every head that entered Hard Rock moved together to whatever they played, every lip moved to the lyrics.
The night started with Rajeev Talwar(Vocals) walking on stage and introducing a very old friend of his, Warren Mendonsa(Guitar). BlackStartBlues (Warren’s solo project) has been in the making since he left for New Zealand in 2004. He played tunes from both albums Nights In Shining Karma and The New Album (Yes, it’s called The New Album) Ode to a Sunny day was brilliant and I specially enjoyed I’m Only Sleeping, a Beatles cover from Revolver.
As Warren played the rest for the band started to walk in. First, Sidd Coutto(drums) and then Bobby Talwar(bass). Warren called for Sidd to come on stage for the last song of his set and he responded by making up lyrics to Warrens guitar riffing.
A little break and then Rajeev walks on stage again followed by the whole band. They were over 30 now, had put on some weight, but they still retained the same energy they did after all these years. Bobby insisted that they were gonna make everyone wait till the end before they play PSP 12. It didn’t matter cos from the moment they started, they we’re awesome. Every song made you move. It was like you were transported back to an I-Rock night. They played songs from all their albums, including Not My Kinda Girl which is my favorite.
My verdict – The best gig this year.
Downers – You couldn’t breath (Yes, it was that crowned). And when a few youngsters decided a mosh pit was the best way to end the night.
