2012 – Movie Review

2012, yet another disaster movie from the box office acclaimed Roland Emmerich whose previous ‘killer’ movies include The Day After Tomorrow, Godzilla and Independence Day among many others.
The movie is about the Mayan prophecy warning the world about the end of mankind.
The plot begins with the discovery of the end of the world. Indians (Yay!!!!) are the first to detect the oncoming peril and then the information is sent to the White House where due precautions are taken. Unfortunately, the end of the world is inevitable. Amidst the end of the world the focus shifts to Jackson Curtis and his unending and surprisingly fruitful attempts at saving his family.
John Cusack (Serendipity) is Jackson Curtis, a freelance writer. Yes, I was thinking that maybe, ummm, planet earth would play this role, but Roland thought otherwise. Anyway, he manages to decipher secrets, fight whatever comes his way and well, be awesome. Jackson is quite bland doesn’t evoke any emotion.
Danny Glover (Dreamgirls) is (supposed to be Barack Obama??) the President of USA and Thandie Newton (Norton) is his daughter. Jimmy Mistry (The Guru) is the Indian who, well, discovers it all and Chiwetel Ejiofor (American Gangster) is basically who takes the info from the Indians and makes plans to avoid the end of the world.
I must say that among all the characters, only one stood out. That character was Woody Harrelson’s conspiracy-theory-junkie who also doubles up as a radio talk show host. His hippie ways and crazy talk actually prove to be all true in the end. So learn your lessons people. Those who you think are insane may actually hold the key to many secret answers…or they could be actually crazy, who’re we to judge?
All in all, I think one of the best of Roland Emmerich’s creations. This film will definitely stir up strong emotions towards humanity after watching it.
What to watch out for?
The incredible effects, you actually think all those monuments have been destroyed for the film. The effects for all the destruction, the tsunamis, the fire, the earth crumbing will give you goosebumps the size of heat boils. Think that’s gross? Watch the movie, people.
Secondly, a hilarious video hermit Charlie (Woody Harrelson) makes to explain to the people the entire process of how the world will end.
