Tech Week: iPhone 4 troubles and Android 2.2 review

  News of the Week
The iPhone 4 might have launched last week but it is still making headlines. Unfortunately for Apple, they are for all the wrong reasons. Having declared they would not provide a free signal issue correcting Bumper case, Apple has feebly shifted blame to a software issue displaying incorrect signal bars. Bless Apple though; it is doing something about the disaster, applying for a new antenna engineer to replace the presumably fired or ‘missing’ previous employee.   Nokia was another phone manufacturer to have an uneven week. Having lost its biggest and most high-profile industry professional supporter, the Symbian Guru, the Finnish company set about restoring some credibility with a heart-warming speech in which Mobile Solutions head, Anssi Vanjoki proclaimed "The fightback starts now."   With its competitors struggling, Google Android set to capitalise on the otherwise turbulent mobile market. The Google Nexus One was official announced as the first handset to host the new Android 2.2 operating system, shortly followed by plans to include the FroYo OS on the Samsung Galaxy S. Google further bolstered their position in the smartphone leagues with details of Android 3.0 appearing this week.   Microsoft Kinect is set to transform the way we interact with gaming on the Xbox 360 forever. Well, at least that is what Microsoft would lead us to believe. Having launched the prices of Kinect early in the week, pre-sales appeared to be doing so poorly that there have been calls for the motion-sensing gaming peripheral’s price to be lowered.   ——————————————————————————————————————————————————————

Fortunately, Google obliged bringing us the chance for a first impressions look at its latest mobile operating system, Android 2.2, aka FroYo. HTC Wildfire: Vodafone selling it now

The HTC Wildfire has landed on Vodafone and is yours to own as of now. There’s no more pre-ordering, just the chance to collar yet another Android winner from HTC.   For those out of the loop, the HTC Wildfire rocks a slower processor and lower-res screen compared to the HTC Legend and HTC Desire, but it still comes with oodles of extras, including the social networking-friendly HTC Sense. ————————————-

————————————- You can land the HTC Desire for free on a £20 contract, although that will tie you down for the next two years. And be warned that Android updates on phones rocking special skins tend to take a while to come good. Just look at how long it’s taking the HTC Hero to get its much-need boost to Android 2.1.   That said, you do get a phone with plenty of skills. We’re talking 5 megapixel camera, capacitive touchscreen and access to the latest Android apps.   Via Electricpig

Xbox Live Family Pack unveiled

The push to make Kinect the ultimate social gaming platform has kicked off in earnest, with Microsoft unveiling a new Xbox Live Family Pack due to land in November, the same month as its hands-free motion control system.   The deal will let four gamers in the same house access Xbox Live Gold, meaning the chance to play online, dabble in Facebook and Last.fm, or join virtual parties to watch Premier League games or movies. ————————————-

————————————- One primary account holder will be responsible for other users, allowing them to set parental controls and dole out MS points for spending on downloadable content and other online goodies. There’ll even be the chance to view each users’ habits on Xbox.com.   Microsoft is clearly hoping this will encourage more families to shell out for consoles and join the Kinect party. But it sounds to us like an ideal ruse to save loads of cash if you live with a few pals and you each have an Xbox stashed in your room.   The Xbox Live Family Pack will cost $99 Stateside, with UK prices to be announced. Expect to pay around £80 when the service launches.   Via Major Nelson
